BIG + TALL
TOUCH THE BOTTOM c20
One of my favorite parts about Bloodfest last year were the out of state visits. Oubliette and Newton brought their crew from Philly and psyche bands Smallpox (from Charleston) and Big + Tall (Atlanta) also made an appearance in Tampa Bay. I’ve mentioned my Smallpox experience awhile back, but if I didn’t say anything before, Big + Tall put on a really crucial set that night at well. When I say psyche, I don’t mean flowers and lights and feeling oddly reborn or anything, rather this is like being dead but generated back to life after your ghost found a hallucinogen dealer in the metaphysical realm. While Smallpox uses delayed vocals and cursed tribal rhythms for their brand of otherworldy music, Big + Tall (because of the blown out recordings, chants and sporadic creep noises) sound like the band from the haunted basement, and it’s really up to you if you want to get lured into it’s doomed chambers or not. Check out their out-of-print cassette that I found available once again off Swamp Touch, as well as a recording Josh made from their live set in Nashville’s ‘The Green Womb.’ I can’t wait to see them at another gathering in INC.
