Gauntlet Legends – World Warrior

4 02 2011

Video I put together splicing Street Fighter 2 footage for Deeyay and Los D’s project Gauntlet Legends. I may perhaps be the only person besides themselves that have these recordings, so I figured I’d put something out there for it. The Fight is Everything.

DANCE PARTY w/Outmode, Diamond Hymen, Deeyay + more

12 07 2010

For those with unrequited summer fulfillment, there’s only one thing left to do: DANCE. Put your cares away and party at the Dust like there’s no tomorrow with an awesome assortment of booty shaking drum machines, vocoder lullabies, synthesizer take over and a DJ duo for back up and beats.

Outmode – You might of seen him at a recent dance party with fellow Tampa acts at Lou’s; now he’s on tour with Diamond Hymen. Minimal tech groundwork that works its way towards radiating body music.

Diamond Hymen – Synthtress that brings to mind skating rink strobe light dreams. Let it take over your every move until it’s time to wake up.

Deeyay – Currently slowing down the BPM in favor of pierced ambient skies leading towards space voyages. Merging electronic styles has always been his forte so anything’s possible in the beyond.

download for ‘GUTS/GOLD’:

download for ‘Look What You’ve Done (Neon Filth)’:

+ DJ Weedleaf and DJ A.O. crossfading decades of dance grooves and one more possible act.

$3 for the acts on the road gets you in and is greatly appreciated.

SAFG 31, October 2009

Jacob posted this up for download on his blog Dead Drone earlier this month. At times radiating, other times electronically destructive like a spaceship blasting electro as it crashes into an alien planet. Features a brief Outmode interview and some of my favorite live Deeyay beats are contained on this tape. SAFG has never been funkier, with Deeyay and Outmode still kicking it strongly with the left-field dance grooves.

9th Day of Tampa – Uh Oh Spades

21 12 2009

As if two rivers were running parallel to each other, went through a couple different paths, and met back up together into one gulf stream is how I feel the journey that Jacob and I made as we drifted along one side and soon crossed paths fully with Stay Away From Ghosts, Cephia’s, and other Tampa based projects into one force. And it’s been one hell of a current, that’s for sure.

Although I didn’t do any music until sometime recently, Jacob was always a big influence on me starting from our early youth. In high school we both didn’t really “get” why everyone loved going to some terrible emo pop shows every weekend of the same exact setlists and also overall why all people seemed to enjoy doing was gossiping and sucking each others’ blood and essence in order to gain their own. Should we waste our time along with these herd hag abominations? Answer: I’d rather kill myself than to live that way for the rest of my life.

-Uh Oh Spades playing at Transitions Art Gallery, 2008. Vid by Alex Gaesser.

Hence, Uh Oh Spades, of course not taking as much as a backlash as I’m making it sound, found a humble approach and escape to what the art world has to offer, and was born. He saved some money, got equipped, and from a RAWR to a Wreck and to the last full length (Look What You’ve Done) Neon Filth, his objective of making a sound of his own was a success. One thing I noticed about Jacob is that he’s pretty good at blending two different styles or moods together to a fixated point that becomes up to the listener and dancer to decide how it makes them feel. Once he moved to Nashville, he changed his project’s name to Deeyay, and along with just a band name change he also morphed into a higher state of body music. Every show that Deeyay plays at now instantly becomes an altered party.

The UOS album that Jacob had offered on Deaddrone is the last full length Neon Filth. It was recorded for the MLU/UOS tour in Summer of ’08 and he came back with not too many copies left. I’m not too sure of how many people from Florida and Tampa itself were able to check it out, but this album has some gems for sure! It’s actually my favorite, not just because of the feel on this one but the time and place I was in when I was listening to this. Jacob had gone to Thailand for a few months to see his family, and I thought it was cool to hear that he’d brought his synth and drum machine along the trip with him. I was waiting to see what kind of eastern vibe he’d get from the temples, shrines and heavenly reaching mountaintops, and sure enough when he came back and played a show he handed me a cassette titled ‘Wreck.’ I remember him recording a couple of the tracks from the time we had an apartment the year prior, but the new songs on side B especially the track 12th Cent blew my mind. I always believed in the potential my friend had, and this release had the evidence. But that wasn’t it, as quickly following up was this album, Neon Filth. I immediately put it into my mom’s boom box and holy shit, Uh Oh Spades has never been this funky before.

It starts off like a dirty DJ set intro, and the clubbers start trickling in on the 2nd track. The synth lines on this track and 8 remind me of watching  a Paper Rad intermission, very 80’s computer music sounding. 3 has some strange electronic creature sounds on it, one of my favorite things that UOS implants into his songs that give them a quirky, sci-fi feel to it. I think the neon trash can be heard on tracks 6 and 7, where both uppity laced keyboards play within deep dirty bass. Hey, this kid’s got nothing to hide, so why not blend it all and destroy duality for good. Last track ends on a good vibe, and gives me a sense that things change but it’s not over, especially for Deeyay.

Dungeon of Relics -or- Some Recently Obtained Power Through Blackouts

4 11 2009

I woke up into a shroud of darkness. I had not one clue how long I’ve been dormant, where I was, or how I came here. A sound of droplets could be heard from a distance, and judging from the echos they gave off against walls I could assume that I was in a vast hallway. I could barely stand up, cold and naked, and as I started blindfully walk through god knows what, I tried recollecting thoughts of a reason to everything and its causes.

I trailed my hands along a freezing stone wall, walking into puddles pretty frequently and shards of broken glass. I begin to lose hope of walking down this corridor, as the pain of curiosity was too unbearable. I sat down against the wall, closed my eyes since there was nothing to even see, and realized hopelessness was the only easy way out.

The water from the puddle that my feet were in stung at my bleeding pores, and I sat there like this for days. Then, suddenly, the water felt differently, it smelt like liquid flesh and I reached my hands out into it and through it. It was there that I pulled out a rectangular shaped object that I knew wasn’t there before. I took it because it was the only fascinating clue I had and then I had to find a light. I bathed my hands in the liquid of my own blood and continued walking down the dark hallway until I found a room. I crawled around and spread my arms around until I felt another unknown object. I wiped my bloody hands over it hoping for another mystical occurrence, and to my amazement the object glowed and it shined through every crevice and plane in the room. I then immediately looked at the mysterious entity that formed from earlier and it seemed to be some supernatural cassette tape. It looked like this:

BLOOD! 2 compilation off Stay Away From Ghosts, 2009

I opened it and saw that it had a written account of various names that must of contributed to the making of this musical relic. The names listed were in order: Alien Overmind, CrAow, Uh-Oh Spades, Russian Tsarlag, Deluxin, Haves and Thirds, Outmode, Lazy Magnet, and Lesson Lesson Lessen Relearn. After reading a warning on the tape that read Stay Away From Ghosts, a disembodied voice called out straight into my consciousness and said, “This is an account from a long gone age that was magically induced by solo artists that chose the path of personal conquests that, although created from separate forces, came together with the minds that neither stood in the blind light or accepted the fate of darkness. The intentions of these music making mages isn’t to resurrect some sort of old long gone art or fantastical beast into a never ending cycle of creation and destruction, but rather to take the risks of practicing new styles that no dusty old spellbook has ever taught before. Convention is the real curse, and lacks individual experience.”

Shining the Holy Ark

I immediately wanted to hear these lost sounds, but I knew that something else was out there. I noticed there was a dead body in this room that never made it out alive, and before I could walk out I heard a bone rattling-in-armor sound which gave me more of a chill than I’ve felt being naked in the freezing dungeon water. The body became an undead Skeleton Warrior (circa 2004) that made some shrilling noise just waiting to ensnare me in deathly fear. Instead of fighting it off, I stood there with confidence, and said that I actually enjoyed the sounds it was making. It felt flattered and it thanked me for healing its cursed soul by giving me its armor courtesy of Roofless Records, an ancient foundation.

With this support I was able to reach new levels and it wasn’t too long after I realized that this armor gave me powers whereever I walked and even literally opened a gateway out of the roof of these sickening, stagnant dungeon walls. I climbed above into a new, cleared land, where objects were off in great distances. “Where do I go now?” I said to myself. I stood there intaking the fresh air, and once again heard a voice call to me, and it said “The path you choose is for you and you alone, and you can go about it when you’re ready but if you must need guidance, this tape shall be the expressway towards your real form.”

-Deeyay – GUTS/GOLD, 2009

This tape, a destiny geared to a final fantasy to end all fantasies, is by experimental dance musician magician Deeyay. A seal encloses the package, in which one has to choose whether or not they’re ready to break away from the familiar ground that they once kissed and pissed on. This release calls upon a road of new heights while never forgetting the best parts of this individual’s music making past, known as the art of Uh-Oh Spades. Wisps from far away space beings, melodies floating through a wormhole and arriving back as evolved forms, and spellbounding house segments. I highly recommend some to experience this attunement.

I continued to walk through this electronic desert through its many hard pounding waves and settling chilled nights after, and I got stuck on my journey when I found a strategy based fantasy game, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. I see myself spending many hours trying to beat another digital quest while in the distant future will review these albums further and more. All I can say then basically is….. keep an eye out for these releases before they become ancient relics!

Electronic Entities

21 09 2009

This is a show I’m setting up in Orlando in about 3 weeks. It should be pretty good! I’m excited to see my dark companion come by to electrify Florida. I’ll be borrowing a projector as well to use for backdrops to intensify things. There’s also going to be another Deeyay show in Tampa the night before that I’ll gather more details about soon. So far I believe it’ll be him, Diamond Hymen, Skeleton Warrior, and Alien Overmind.

Deeyay – “my favorite dance hits got sucked into a black hole, and this is how it sounded when it came back to me”

Dark Sea of Awareness – a rainbow in curved air for the club

Cyber-Swarm – king koopa’s got a brand new airship

Future Snakes – electric dreams

DEEYAY @ Myspace

I have channeled into a frequency from the future that is on it’s way into the now. It has crossed paths with dead space ships along the way and slowly turned them all back on and set a new course for each of them towards a galactic club. It’s now coming to Earth. I’d totally give these new tracks, an exerpt from each side of the new DEEYAY tape titled Guts/Gold, a good listen. Electronic progression towards a new era; I can’t wait to hear more.
